Local media reported that at least four people were killed in the drone strike which targeted an apartment building in the refugee camp. Hamas later revealed that the strike killed Saaed Atallah Ali, one its military officials, as well as his wife and two daughters.

“We pledge to our people to avenge the pure blood that was shed and to confirm that our upcoming series of responses will be in actions before words,” said Hamas in a statement, threatening retribution.

The Beddawi camp was established in 1955 and has been taking in large numbers of Palestinian refugees since the Nabatieh and Tal el-Zataar camp were destroyed in 1974 and 1976 respectively. Currently, it is home to 18000 inhabitants and contains five United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) run schools, which caters to over 3700 students.
