WASHINGTON: United States President-elect Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that he may declare a national emergency in order to deport millions of immigrants from the country.
The confirmation came on truth social, following a post by conservative activist and president of Judicial Watch, Thomas Fitton.
Fitton stated earlier in November that Trump is “prepared to declare a national emergency and will use military assets to reverse the Biden invasion through a mass deportation program.” Trump quoted the post, writing “TRUE!!”

Declaring a national emergency will allow Trump to redirect funds allocated for other purposes. In 2019, Trump declared a national emergency to fund his border wall as he regurgitated many of the same migrant crime claims that propelled him to another term this year. He stated the emergency was due to “an invasion of our country with drugs, with human traffickers, with all types of criminals and gangs.”
In 2024, Trump is planning to use the additional funds to create larger holding facilities that would help facilitate a vaster deportation operation, which hasn’t been possible in the past. The lack of space has led Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to allow asylum seekers into the country with future court dates with immigration judges set.
Trump’s team believes that the roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US would choose removal from the country over being imprisoned in the aforementioned camps.
In regards to the use of “military assets”, Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy, Stephen Miller, has previously advocated for the national guard to be mobilised to aid with deportation efforts through large-scale raids.
