New school timings announced in Punjab


In response to the deteriorating air qualify in Lahore, the Punjab Environment Protection Department announced new school timings across the province.

LAHORE: In response to the deteriorating air qualify in Lahore, the Punjab Environment Protection Department announced new school timings across the province.

Schools will now open it gates at 8:45 am starting from October 28. The new school timings across Punjab will remain in effect till January 31, 2025.

The decision comes as Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeded 150, indicating unhealthy air conditions that post significant health risks, particularly for children and the elderly.

To mitigate exposure to harmful air pollutants, school assemblies will be conducted indoors and all outdoor activities were suspended.

The Punjab Education Department issued a notification mandating that both, public and private schools adhere to the revised timings and guidelines.

The provincial government also imposed a ban on fireworks until January 31, 2025. The measure aims to reduced air pollution levels further and protect citizen’s health.

Lahore residents were also advised to limit outdoor exposure, wear masks when outside and keep windows and doors closed to prevent the smog from infiltrating their homes.

Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb called on the public to cooperate with the govemrent efforts to combat smog. She urged the citizens to report any vehicles and factories emitting smoke by calling the helpline 1373.

The PML-N member assured that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would take ‘appropriate’ action against violators. Aurangzeb also encouraged residents to ensure their vehicles are in good condition to minimise emissions.

Lahore has consistently ranked among the most polluted cities globally, with recent data from the IQAIR showing an alarming AQI of 503, categorised as “hazardous to health”.

Medical experts has warned people with respiratory conditions, such as asthma and dust allergies, to remain extremely vigilant.
