Weather update: Heavy rainfall triggers flooding across Pakistan


Weather update: Met Office warned of flash flooding in local water inlets in Gwadar, Washuk, Kharan, Panjgur, Noshki and Kech, Awaran, and Kalat.

DIR: In response to heavy rainfall, several regions across Pakistan are facing severe flooding on Saturday. In Upper Dir district, continuous rain led to “high-level of flooding” in the Panjkora River, the district’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) revealed.

According to the DC, residents living near the river and canals were instructed to evacuate their homes for safety.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued warnings of potential flash floods in various parts of the country on Saturday. Areas including Dera Ghazi Khan, Lasbella, Khuzdar, Ziarat, Kohe Suleman, Barkhan, Zhob, and Sherani are at particular risk of flooding.

Similarly, low-lying areas in Muslim Bagh, Quetta, Pishin, Kech, Panjgur, Turbat, Harnai, Kohlu, Naseerabad, and Jafarabad are also advised to remain vigilant.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), areas such as Dir, Swat, Chitral, Kohistan, and Mansehra are also under threat of sudden floods. Similarly, the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Kashmir regions are expected to experience heavy rainfall and even snowfall over the next two days, from Saturday until Monday.

Residents and tourists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel until the weather clears.

Weather update for tomorrow

According to the PMD, weather update for Sunday includes rain with strong winds and thunderstorms are expected to lash Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and upper and central Sindh on Sunday. Similarly, rain is expected in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Punjab, GB and Kashmir.

Hail is expected in upper KP, Kashmir, and northeast- and southern Balochistan. Hail is also forecast to pelt southern and eastern Punjab, particularly the Pothohar region. Farmers are advised to ensure safety of their crops.

Meanwhile, the PMD published a forecast of snowfall is select regions up north.
